ISLAMIC, 'Abbasid Caliphate. Al-Mutawakkil, AH 232-247 / AD 847-861. Dirham (Silver, 21 mm, 2.74 g, 7 h), citing the caliph al-Mutawakkil 'ala Allah, Dimashq, AH 247 = AD 861. SICA IV, 325. Rare. The flan slightly wavy, otherwise, about very fine.

This rare dirham dates to the last year of al-Mutawakkil; it was struck just months before his assasination, which led to a period of civil unrest known today as the 'Anarchy at Samarra'.
